What are the safe temperatures for a intel core 2 quad processor?

My idle for each core is the low 40's, but when i play Garrys Mod, or Battlefield Bad Company 2 or really any game, my temps in each core go up to the 60's and low 70's. Ive heard over 70 degrees celcius is bad. But ive looked around and heard mixed answers. What are the safe temperatures for a intel core 2 quad processor?
Intel processors have thermal throttling. If the temperature gets too high the processor will slow itself down to reduce the heat. If the temperature goes to such level that it could damage itself it shuts itself down. What are the safe temperatures for a intel core 2 quad processor?
Intel states 72C is the maximum temperature, though you can go over it a little and it won't do anything. Basically if you don't go over 72C there is close to 0% chance of your CPU dying. 74C maybe a 1% chance it'll die.
