It might be something simple like graphics drivers that need updating or running the game as windows administrator, turning off User Account Control (Vista/7 only).
If you didn't uninstall it correctly last time, it could cause crashes. Use the manual uninstall if in doubt. http://support.ea.com/cgi-bin/ea.cfg/php鈥?/a>
If you haven't patched the game, you will need to update it to 1.50; http://www.filefront.com/6194285/Battlef鈥?/a>

You need to run the game as administrator or you will get kicked by Punkbuster (or the game will crash).
If you haven't played online, you will need to update punkbuster as it can't always auto update which will end up with you getting kicked from the game which can result in the game crashing completely;
Make sure your windows user account type is administrator.
Download and run http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?pag鈥?/a>
Download: http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?pag鈥?/a> and run the uninstall first, then install.
If necessary make sure you allow the services PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe from your "C:\Windows\system32\" folder (or "C:\Windows\SysWOW64\" on 64bit systems) in security software like virus scanners and/or firewalls.
In case of doubt, manually add both to your firewall's allow list.
After the installation process you will only find PnkBstrA, so just make sure this process file is not blocked.
A corrupt cd key will cause an error (or total crash) but re-installing should have fixed this.
